Set on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple features a multi-storied structure with a gilded roof and intricately carved silver doors. The main sanctum houses a five-faced Shiva in the form of a lingam.

Pashupatinath is also the site of the annual Maha Shivaratri festival, which draws thousands of devotees and sadhus from Nepal and India for a night of worship. Behind the temple lie the traditional Hindu cremation grounds, offering a glimpse into local customs and rituals.

    Morning: Boudhanath Stupa

Next, visit Boudhanath Stupa, located approximately 11 km (7 miles) from Kathmandu. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the largest and most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal.

The stupa features four pairs of eyes looking in the cardinal directions, symbolizing awareness and compassion. The squiggle between the eyes represents the Sanskrit numeral one, signifying unity. Built on an octagonal base, the stupa is surrounded by 108 prayer wheels inscribed with the Tibetan mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum”.

Often called “Little Tibet”, Boudhanath is the perfect place to observe traditional Tibetan culture and monastic life, with several Tibetan monasteries and the residences of Buddhist monks nearby.

Founded in the 9th century, the city reflects the Golden Age of Nepali art and architecture.
