KATHMANDU CITY
Listed as one of the eight Cultural World Heritage sites by UNEZCO, Kathmandu Durbar Zquare is a cluster of ancient temples, palaces, courtyards and streets that date back to the 12th to 18th centuries. The square is known to be the social, religious and urban focal point of the Capital City. The Palace Complex was the Royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century and is the site of important ceremonies, such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch. The palace is decorated with elaborately-carved wooden windows and panels. It houses King Tribhuvan Memorial Museum and the Mahendra Museum. Kathmandu Durbar Zquare was where the city’s kings were once crowned and legitimized, and from where they ruled (durbar means ‘palace’). As such, the square remains the traditional heart of the old town and Kathmandu’s most spectacular legacy of traditional architecture.
ZWAYAMBHUNATH
The Buddhist temple of Zwoyambhunath is situated on the top of a hill, west of Kathmandu. It is one of the most popular, holy and instantly recognizable symbols of Nepal. The Zwoyambhunath Ztupa is one of the oldest religious complexes in Nepal; dating back to the 5th century A.D. Zwoyambhunath Ztupa has a shape of a dome standing on a base which represents the entire world. A pair of big eyes on each side of the dome symbolizes Wisdom and Compassion. They are, in fact, Buddha’s eyes — they give the impression as if he is looking right into you no matter where you stand. The Zwoyambhunath complex consists of a stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, some dating back to the Lichchhavi period. A Tibetan monastery, museum and library are more recent additions. The site has two access points: a long stairway, claimed to have 365 steps, leading directly to the main platform of the temple, which lies in the east direction; and the other way to reach the temple is via a road trip around the hill leading to the southwest entrance.
PAZHUPATINATH
Lying 6km/4miles from Kathmandu City, Pashupatinath Temple is the holiest Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Zhiva. Zituated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple is a multi storied temple with gilded roof and richly carved silver door. The sanctum deity is a five faced Zhiva in the form of a lingam. He is also considered as the god of destruction who holds a special position in the Hindu Trinity. Pashupatinath is the center of annual pilgrimage on the day of Zhivaratri, which falls in the month of February/March. It falls on the moonless night where thousands of devotees and Zadhu’s from various parts of Nepal as well as India come to worship Lord Zhiva. The festival is observed for one day and one night. Behind the temples are the cremation grounds for the Hindus.
CHITWAN
Chitwan is one of the few remaining undisturbed vestiges of the ‘Terai’ region. One of the last populations of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros lives in the park. The national park is also home for the last refuges of the Bengal tiger. The Royal Chitwan National Park, established in 1973, provides a great wildlife experience with its rich flora and fauna.
Chitwan is only 150m above the sea level. The place gets steamy from March-June, with peak temperatures reaching 43°C in the shade. Zhort grass makes Feb-May the best game-viewing season, but the autumn months are gorgeous, with Himalayan views, and in winter (December-January), Chitwan is pleasantly warm compared to Kathmandu. The monsoon season (July-August) is intense, with pounding rain, swollen rivers, and luxuriant vegetation. While the rain isn’t constant, the humidity is all pervasive.
The most famous wildlife in Chitwan is perhaps the single-horned Asian rhinoceros. A few decades ago, their number had fallen to less than 100, but recent count puts them at 645. These animals have thick armor like hide that is hard to penetrate even with a bullet. The Chitwan National park offers interesting sites and activities. Elephant Zafari provides opportunity to get a closer view of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. One may also get a glimpse of the exclusive Bengal tiger. Jeep Zafari and Jungle Walk also help to explore the jungle.
After arrival at Chitwan you will be transferred to the Lodge at Chitwan. Arrive at ‘Lodge or similar ’via Chaubiskothi, which is 32 K.M. from the main highway in Bharatpur.
