A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a remarkable complex of ancient palaces, temples, courtyards, and narrow streets dating from the 12th to 18th centuries. Once the royal residence of Nepalese kings, the square served as the political, religious, and cultural heart of the capital.
The palace complex is renowned for its intricately carved wooden windows and panels and remains the venue for important traditional ceremonies, including royal coronations in the past. Highlights include the King Tribhuvan Memorial Museum and the Mahendra Museum. Another iconic landmark is the Nyatapola Temple, a five-tiered pagoda also constructed by King Bhupatindra Malla.
