Pashupatinath Temple
Located just 6 km from Kathmandu city, Pashupatinath is Nepal’s holiest Hindu temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Nestled amidst lush greenery on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, the multi-storied temple features a gilded roof and intricately carved silver doors. The main sanctum houses a five-faced Shiva in the form of a lingam, representing his role as the god of destruction within the Hindu Trinity.
Pashupatinath is the center of devotion during the annual Shivaratri festival (February/March), attracting thousands of pilgrims and sadhus from across Nepal and India. Behind the temple complex lie Hindu cremation ghats, a sacred site integral to the temple’s spiritual significance.
Boudhanath Stupa
Approximately 11 km from Kathmandu, Boudhanath is one of the largest and holiest Buddhist stupas in Nepal. The stupa features four pairs of eyes facing the cardinal directions, symbolizing Buddha’s watchful wisdom. The squiggle between the eyes represents the Sanskrit numeral “1,” symbolizing unity.
Believed to have been built by King Man Deva following the guidance of Goddess Mani Jogini, Boudhanath stands on an octagonal base surrounded by prayer wheels inscribed with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. At ground level, a brick wall features 108 meditating Buddha images behind copper prayer wheels.
Often called “Little Tibet,” the area around Boudhanath is home to numerous Tibetan monasteries and houses of Lamas, offering visitors an authentic glimpse of Tibetan culture. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boudhanath is a must-visit spiritual and cultural landmark in the Kathmandu Valley.
