A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a remarkable complex of ancient palaces, temples, courtyards, and narrow streets dating from the 12th to 18th centuries. Once the royal residence of Nepalese kings, the square served as the political, religious, and cultural heart of the capital.

The palace complex is renowned for its intricately carved wooden windows and panels and remains the venue for important traditional ceremonies, including royal coronations in the past. Highlights include the King Tribhuvan Memorial Museum and the Mahendra Museum. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the revered Kumari Ghar, home of the Living Goddess, who occasionally appears at her balcony to bless devotees.

    Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, Swayambhunath Stupa is one of Nepal’s most sacred and instantly recognizable landmarks. Dating back to the 5th century AD, this ancient Buddhist stupa symbolizes harmony and enlightenment.

The white dome represents the world, while the iconic all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on each side symbolize wisdom and compassion. The complex includes shrines, temples, monasteries, a museum, and a library, with elements from the Licchavi period. Visitors can reach the stupa either by climbing the famous 365-step staircase from the east or via a scenic road leading to the southwest entrance.

Afternoon: Patan City Sightseeing & Tibetan Handicraft Center

    Patan Durbar Square (Lalitpur)

Located in the historic city of Patan, also known as Lalitpur, Patan Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of Newari architecture. One of the oldest Buddhist cities in the valley, Patan is celebrated for its rich artistic heritage.

The palace complex features three main courtyards—Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk, and Keshav Narayan Chowk—with Mul Chowk being the oldest and most significant. The western section of the square is home to notable temples such as the Krishna Temple, Bhimsen Temple, and the Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar).

The square is filled with ancient palaces, pagoda-style temples, stone baths, bronze carvings, and finely crafted Hindu and Buddhist statues. Located just 6 km (4 miles) from Kathmandu, Pashupatinath Temple is the holiest Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Nestled along the sacred Bagmati River amid lush greenery, this multi-storied temple features a gilded roof and intricately carved silver doors. The main sanctum houses a five-faced Shiva in the form of a lingam, revered as the god of destruction and a central figure in the Hindu Trinity.

Pashupatinath is the center of a grand annual pilgrimage during Maha Shivaratri (February/March), when thousands of devotees from Nepal and India gather to worship. Behind the temple lie the Hindu cremation grounds, an integral part of the sacred site.

    Boudhanath Stupa

One of the largest stupas in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boudhanath is the most important Buddhist site in Kathmandu. Its iconic all-seeing eyes of Buddha symbolize wisdom and compassion, while the squiggle between the eyes represents the Sanskrit numeral “one”, signifying unity.

At the base of the stupa, prayer wheels inscribed with the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” surround a brick wall featuring 108 images of meditative Buddhas. Often called “Little Tibet”, Boudhanath remains the best place in the Kathmandu Valley to experience traditional Tibetan culture, with numerous Tibetan monasteries surrounding the stupa.
